IN THE GUTTER
By Defekto | February 18, 2007
A couple of weeks ago I shot some “fashion” photos for Joe Giordano’s Gutter Magazine (Issue 2 up now). Once I assembled my models, I thought, “How the F do you shoot fashion photos??” It’s a lot more challenging than you might think. The only direction I gave my models was, “Ok…MODEL!” Though I had great models (Linda Bernstein, Kat Hudson, Debbie Morrison, Teresa, Pam, Caroline and Wilma) the results are less than stellar–you can see for yourself here. The experience gave me a greater appreciation for the people who shoot fashion. It was hard to bust out of the docu-style I typically shoot in and toward the end I decided to shoot a bunch of stuff which will appear as an episode of Neverland.
PAM & LINDA LOOK GREAT, BUT HOW CONTRIVED AND BORING IS THIS PHOTO?

WILMA MARTINEZ
For the uninitiated, Neverland is a photo-based web comic that I started a couple of years ago. New episodes are few and far between since two of the stars have not been available. Jon-Benet Fawcett-Majors has been in rehab since the end of summer and Wilma Martinez never seems to be in the country. BUT…Wilma was in town for the recent shoot, thus the decision to shoot an episode of the serial. Announcements will be made once it is up.
Last summer I met Flickr Superstar AnomalousNYC and he immortalized me in one of his signature portraits. We were in the bathroom at CBGBs and he pointed to the floor in front of two urinals and said, “Sit there.” It seemed perfectly appropriate and I suppose he knew me well enough to demand that I sit in piss and have me put the back of my head on a wet urinal. Anyway, the results were great and he reworked this portrait …and here it is.

Wow… I never knew about Neverland. I just finished episode 1 and can’t wait to get home to experience the rest!
I just noticed your sleeve isn’t finished in that CBGB’s portrait. I didn’t realize the ink was that new.

That ink is old…there’s a gap of skin then the ink continues.

Oh… color me corrected then.
By the way… I love the defekto onslaught. Keep em coming fast and furious my friend!
