ZODIAC SPEAKING
By Defekto | March 29, 2007
One of my earliest Polaroid Portraits was of a woman named Bettye Harden. She lived in my hometown of Salinas, CA and I met her through a friend who called me when I was home for a visit. “You gotta meet this lady.” She said, “She worked on the Zodiac Killer case.” In fact, she’s the woman who broke the Zodiac’s code. A code that couldn’t even be broken by the FBI.

Bettye pulled out her scrapbooks, notes and photos from the time she worked on the case and shared her stories of when she and her husband would stay up late, sitting at their kitchen table trying to break the Zodiac’s “unbreakable” code and it was she who had the “Eureka” moment. Bettye’s even mentioned in the Wikipedia entry on the Zodiac Killer.
So after a nice visit with Bettye, I go over to my sister’s home where we’re having a family reunion of sorts. I walk into my sisters kitchen and proudly announce, “I just met the woman who solved the Zodiac code!”. A friend of my sisters walks out of the room, my sister looks at me and says, “Her cousin was killed by the Zodiac.” How was I supposed to know?

People were outraged by this movie art for Captivity, but I think it’s pretty fucking cool. Could we be in the midst of a trend for more graphic, well-designed movie art?
